About Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt

Monroe Carell is one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals.

With more than 500 physicians trained in 30 pediatric and surgical specialties, we’re equipped to handle any issue a child may face—from the simple to the complex. Monroe Carell offers comprehensive services for everything from cancer, transplant, trauma, and sickle cell disease, to developmental disorders, ENT, general surgery and others. Featuring Centers of Excellence for the treatment of diabetes and congenital heart disorders, Monroe Carell is also home to the highest level NICU in the state and serves as Nashville's Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center.

Growing to New Heights

The development of a four-floor hospital expansion project began In 2016, with each floor adding 40,000 square feet of space.

Heart Institute

In June 2019, patients were moved into the 40,000-square-foot Pediatric Heart Institute on the 10th floor. The institute comprises a 38-bed dedicated space for cardiac care, bringing together all cardiology-related specialties onto one floor.

The expansion also includes a helipad that allows air medical service providers to bring about 40 patients to Monroe Carell per month. This was made possible by the Christy-Houston Foundation with generous support from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Oliver Rolfe.

NICU

In March 2020, Monroe Carell opened the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the 11th floor. Our pioneering Level IV-designated NICU is now one of the largest, with the 106 licensed beds. The expansion allows for 10 additional NICU beds, which is imperative to keeping up with Nashville’s growing population and for accommodating referrals from regional providers. The new units provide a family-centered care approach, allowing parents and infants to room together during hospitalization.

The 11th floor was funded by gifts from Laura Jo and Wayne Dugas, the Cal Turner Family Foundation and the James Stephen Turner Family Foundation; Scott and Sandi Borchetta and Big Machine Label Group; Robin and Richard Patton; The Christy-Houston Foundation, Inc.; Kim and Jeff Leeper; Twice Daily and other community partners. To support the building's expansion, Children’s Hospital launched the Growing to New Heights Campaign in 2014. The campaign was a $40 million philanthropic effort that exceeded its fundraising goal. The keystone of the campaign was a $10 million contribution from Kathryn Carell Brown, Julie Carell Stadler, Edie Carell Johnson and their families. They are the daughters of the hospital’s namesake, Monroe Carell Jr., and of Ann Scott Carell.

To continue the growing support for children and families, Children’s Hospital will open a new advanced maternal-fetal clinic on the 9th floor.

Reed Family Maternal Fetal Clinic

In September 2021, a 4,600-square-foot, state-of-the-art maternal fetal clinic space opened to allow specialists to further enhance and grow innovative programming that helps families seek optimal outcomes for their unborn babies.
