Preoperative Assessment and Teaching for Children’s Hospital (PATCH)
When your child needs surgery or a general anesthetic for a diagnostic study at Monroe Carell the PATCH team is here to help. We are a team of 11 Nurse Practitioners with backgrounds in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Primary Care and Internal Medicine. Our team includes an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner with a background in Hematology/Oncology, a Registered Nurse and a Pediatric Anesthesiologist.
A PATCH visit will prepare you and your child to best cope with the surgical experience. During your PATCH visit, a preoperative specialist will explain the surgical process in the way children learn best, through their senses. Your child will receive suggestions to help procedures go smoothly.
You will also meet with a Family Nurse Practitioner who will ask you questions about your child's and family's health. He or she will also examine your child and talk with your family about the operation and anesthesia. A nurse will review preoperative instructions and provide a copy to take with you.
We encourage you to ask questions and share your concerns. Brothers and sisters are invited to attend the PATCH visit, too.
