Special Needs Mobility, Equipment and Car Seat Program

Wheelchair/seating and mobility

Our Occupational and Physical Therapists are trained to assess children up to age 18 for mobility devices and seating systems. Our goals are to improve positioning and promote functional independence. We customize manual and power wheelchairs and other seating devices to meet functional outcomes and orthopedic/pressure prevention. We work directly with Durable Medical Equipment dealers who are also qualified on the types of equipment necessary, keeping up to date on quality.

Special needs car seats

Sometimes, a child's health care needs may require additional support or attention during transportation that cannot be met by a conventional car seat.

The Department of Rehabilitation has Therapists that are Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) and Trained in Medical Car Seats.

Candidates for the Special Needs Transportation Clinic include children whose weight has exceeded the limit of the five-point harness, but still require additional trunk support provided by a five-point harness. Others include children with behavioral safety concerns that are not met by conventional restraints.

Equipment Clinic

Our Occupational and Physical Therapists are trained and to assess children up to 18 years for adaptive equipment, such as standing frames, walkers, gait trainers, bath chairs, lifts, positioning chairs, etc. The goals are to improve their positioning and promote functional independence. We work directly with Durable Medical Equipment dealers who are also qualified on the types of equipment necessary, keeping up to date on quality.

Our clinic provides demonstrations of various equipment to allow families/caregivers to make a well-educated decision on what will work for the child and caregiver.
