Cardiac Catheterization
The Pediatric Heart Institute's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Children’s Hospital is one of the 10 busiest in the nation. We perform catheterization procedures on newborns, infants, children and adults living with congenital heart disease. Our interventional cardiologists are recognized experts in the field of pediatric cardiac catheterization and have the most experience with these procedures in the state of Tennessee. Our newly expanded hybrid lab can handle more procedures than ever, with leading-edge capabilities and technologies.
Conditions We Treat
We treat all conditions requiring catheterization, including:

Why Choose Cardiac Catheterization at Children's Hospital
- Experienced care
With a dedicated team of congenital interventional cardiologists, we perform more than 800 heart catheterizations each year at our Heart Institute, including hundreds of complex interventional procedures. This means our team has more experience and produces better outcomes than any other pediatric cardiac catheterization program in the area.
- Collaborative care
Our team of experts plans every procedure together to ensure we account for each patient's unique heart, medical history and needs. We work with other subspecialists throughout our hospital to provide individualized care, addressing the full scope of your child’s life, from infancy to adulthood. Two attending congenital heart disease interventionists and a team of specialists perform every high-risk heart catheterization.
- Leading-edge technologies
In our newly expanded hybrid lab, interventional cardiologists and pediatric cardiac surgeons operate together to correct heart problems with less radiation and less time on cardiopulmonary bypass. This means less risk and shorter recovery for patients. We use a live video link to our cardiac intensive care unit and imaging locations to speed communication and provide seamless care between teams.
- Low-radiation procedures
Our program has substantially decreased the amount of radiation needed for heart catheterization procedures. We are among the lowest radiation catheterization labs for congenital heart disease in the southeast region. Both our team and technology allow us to provide superior care for every congenital heart disease patient.
- Advancing research
Our team is creating new techniques and devices to improve cardiac catheterization care for our own patients and around the world. We participate in clinical and device trials in the U.S., which means our patients have access to the best research, techniques and technology available.
