A new future for children's heart care
Monroe Carell and Vanderbilt Health have pioneered pediatric heart care and surgery for decades. In 2026, entrepreneur, philanthropist and civic leader Tom Golisano made a transformative $40 million gift that recognized and strengthened our leadership and commitment to children and families impacted by pediatric heart problems.

Monroe Carell also joined the Golisano Children’s Alliance, a growing network of more than 20 children’s hospitals across the country. Alliance hospitals are united by a commitment to improve children’s health care, advance innovation and ensure access for children and families across the country.
The Golisano Pediatric Heart Institute leads a newly established pediatric heart network for clinical learning, research and sharing of data and best practices across Golisano Children’s Alliance hospitals. This coordinated approach will advance treatment for complex heart conditions and accelerate adoption of innovative, evidence-based care for children throughout their lives, wherever they may live.
About the Golisano Pediatric Heart Institute
The Golisano Pediatric Heart Institute comprises clinical services for children with heart conditions, simple to complex; a multi-million-dollar research portfolio; and residency and fellowship programs training the next generation of pediatric heart specialists, surgeons, physician-scientists and more.
Our clinical team provides coordinated care by a team of cardiac care experts with years of training and specialized certifications. The team includes pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists, cardiac-certified nurses and nurse anesthetists, ECMO specialists, support services, child life specialists and others specifically trained in pediatric cardiac care.
The institute:
- Serves more than 20,000 children each year, in the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville and outpatient clinics throughout the region and beyond;
- Performs more than 500 cardiac surgeries each year, including 19 heart transplants in the year in ending June 30, 2026;
- Has programs in pediatric heart transplantation, electrophysiology and interventional cardiology that are among the largest and most experienced in the country;
- Is home to one of the nation’s earliest congenital heart disease programs, and as part of Vanderbilt Health, assures seamless care from fetal diagnosis through adulthood;
- Conducts research across the spectrum of pediatric cardiac care, including leading-edge clinical trials and research in congenital heart disease, fetal cardiology, single-ventricle outcomes, cardiomyopathy, transplantation, genetics, device innovation and quality of life. Our research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and private foundations, now including the Golisano Foundation
- Offers residency and fellowship programs in related fields including pediatric cardiology, congenital heart disease, cardiac surgery, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, heart failure and transplantation, pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric cardiac critical care, and advance practice provider (APP) cardiovascular care.
