Visiting the Pediatric Heart Institute: Common Questions

Am I allowed to stay with my child during tests or procedures?

You can go with your child to tests such as an EKG, chest X-ray, or echocardiogram. If your child is undergoing cardiac catheterization or surgery, you can stay until your child is ready to be sedated. You will then be asked to wait in your child’s room or in our surgery waiting area.

Can I donate blood for my child’s surgery?

Yes, this is known as a directed donation. Your child’s cardiologist, surgeon, or one of their nurses can discuss directed donations.

Directed donations must be made at a Red Cross donor center at least three working days prior to the scheduled surgery. The Red Cross will process the and send it to Children’s Hospital.

Can I stay overnight in my child’s room?

Both parents, or two adults, are allowed to spend the night in the room with their child. Parents of patients in the PICU or NICU cannot stay overnight in the room.

Should I bring anything special to the hospital with me?

You may bring the following items:

• Night gown, pajamas, robe, slippers, toilet articles, etc.

• Toys, books, games, special blankets, etc.

• Recordings of music or stories to listen to during procedures.

It is not necessary to bring medicines your child may be taking. The hospital will supply them.

Can my child visit the hospital before admission?

Yes. Your cardiologist may schedule a “pre-admission” testing visit prior to any procedure At this visit you may schedule a time to meet with the Child Life Specialist. If no appointment is made for preadmission testing, you may arrange a visit with a Child Life Specialist by calling: (615) 322-0357. All information is age-appropriate and may include role-playing with puppets.
